Mama and Baby Bear (Alberta, Canada)

Bycritterlover June 17, 2025June 17, 2025

Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. We drove down this road in high hopes of seeing exactly this kind of thing. These black bears were so fun to watch, especially the adorable cub. It was extremely disappointing when the baby bear vanished down the other side of the hill.

Saving a Bat (Maryland)

Bycritterlover June 17, 2025June 17, 2025

LaVale, Maryland. Well, more correctly, helping a bat. But ‘Saving a Bat’ has a more of a ring to it. (We’re taking care of my dad’s dad’s dad’s mom’s sister [my great great great aunt, I think] for a while and staying at her house.) Anyway, my mom was reading Narnia aloud to my sister…

Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel, Lassen Volcanic National Park (California)

Bycritterlover February 5, 2025June 17, 2025

Lassen Volcanic National Park. Obviously. This cute little guy watched us for a while, and we sure watched him. It was so neat to see this new species! What’s your favorite type of squirrel? There are over two hundred different types, so choose well!

Snake on Sea Lion Caves Pathway (Oregon)

Bycritterlover February 5, 2025June 17, 2025

Florence, Oregon. We were walking down the Sea Lion Caves Pathway in high hopes of seeing sea lions gathered by the hundreds in the sea caves. The pathway was just basically a sidewalk, one side being a drop-off into the Pacific Ocean, and the other being a steep but short bank. That’s where we saw…

Bighorn Sheep (Wyoming)

Bycritterlover February 4, 2025June 17, 2025

National Elk Refuge, Jackson Hole, Wyoming. These guys weren’t exactly cute, and they also weren’t the type of bighorn sheep we were used to seeing. I actually thought they were Dall’s sheep at first, haha. 😏 But when we went home, I looked in a field guide and discovered that no, they weren’t Dall’s sheep….

Lizard at Canyonlands NP (Utah)

Bycritterlover January 31, 2025June 17, 2025

Canyonlands National Park. This cute critter was skittering about, so I caught it. There’s not much to say about it, except that there’s not much to say about it. (This lizard is a Western Fence Lizard. They can grow to be eight inches long. There are 11 species of lizards at Canyonlands, including the northern…

Banana Slug (Washington)

Bycritterlover January 31, 2025June 17, 2025

Fall City, Washington. I was just walking around in our site, and I leapt back–a snake? 😨 But, after the generally general, scary scare, I looked closer. Aha and avast! At last! A banana slug. If it was a banana, it was rather unripe. 🀣 These beastly beasts best even the best of sluggish slugs….

Scrub Jay in Scrub (California)

Bycritterlover January 30, 2025June 17, 2025

Paicines, California. This scrub jay showed up almost every morning at our site at San Benito Thousand Trails. Often, right before school (my sister and I are homeschooled, thanks to my mom) I would pull out my camera and look around for anything that might be near our site (see Deer Fawn, Critter Sightings and…

Chubby Squirrel (California)

Bycritterlover January 30, 2025June 17, 2025

Paicines, California. This big guy would find an acorn, and then he’d go sit on a stump to eat it. He was, as you can see, extremely fat. (I wonder if the people who were in our site before we were fed him. 😲 🀣) Actually, though, he earned it, because he was hard at…

Bycritterlover January 29, 2025June 17, 2025

Paicines, California. This cute little baby deer showed up with its mama almost every day to graze and–believe it or not–slurp up water from a dripping faucet! (There was a creek nearby. 😏🀣)
