Three bighorn sheep eat grass on a mountainside, one pausing to look up.

Bighorn Sheep (Wyoming)

Bycritterlover February 4, 2025June 17, 2025

National Elk Refuge, Jackson Hole, Wyoming. These guys weren’t exactly cute, and they also weren’t the type of bighorn sheep we were used to seeing. I actually thought they were Dall’s sheep at first, haha. šŸ˜ But when we went home, I looked in a field guide and discovered that no, they weren’t Dall’s sheep….

White-Crowned Sparrow, West Thumb Geyser Basin Boardwalk (Wyoming)

Bycritterlover January 23, 2025June 17, 2025

Yellowstone National Park. This white-crowned sparrow was hopping around, so I snagged a few pictures. There’s not much to say about it, but it’s cute. šŸ™‚

Cinnamon Bear Cub (Wyoming)

Bycritterlover January 23, 2025June 17, 2025

Yellowstone National Park. This cute little guy was right on the side of the road. Unfortunately we were on the opposite side, so I zoomed in to the max to snag this shot. We were also driving slowly down the road, so maybe that’s why the picture is so blurry. (Okay, I’ll quit making excuses….

Baby Elk and Its Mama (Wyoming)

Bycritterlover January 21, 2025June 17, 2025

Yellowstone National Park. This little (or big) cutie pie was right outside our site in Grant Village, so I ran out and took a few pictures. I made sure to stay on the other side of the road—who knew?—it might be Feisty Frizzle and her baby! (See Feisty Frizzle, Critter Sightings.) The mama seemed a…

Big Bison on the Road (Wyoming)

Bycritterlover January 21, 2025June 17, 2025

Yellowstone National Park. This dude was clopping down the road. Bison commonly cause traffic jams in YNP. It’s worth it the first few times, but if you’re there a whole summer, you’ll know what I mean by ā€œboringā€. šŸ˜› The proud guys think they own the roads. And everything else.

Feisty Frizzle (Wyoming)

Bycritterlover January 16, 2025June 17, 2025

Yellowstone National Park. Since we were spending the whole summer in Grant Village, we decided to name the local elk (although, to be honest, there was technically no way to tell if an elk was a different one or not). We came up with Feisty Frizzle. (The “feisty” part came from her charging a dude…

Huge Bison, Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming)

Bycritterlover January 14, 2025June 17, 2025

Yellowstone National Park. This big ol’ bison was slurping up muddy, seeping thermal water. Each time after doing that, he would lick his nostrils. You would be alarmed at how deep the tongue went into the nostril. He also had a tendency to yawn.

Grizzly 399! (Wyoming)

Bycritterlover January 14, 2025June 17, 2025

Yellowstone National Park. Grizzly 399! Blurry picture, furry bear. This was super cool, especially noting the fact that she got hit by a car and died only four months later.
